Malcolm Gladwell wrote in his best selling book Outliers that to become an expert in a given field one must focus on practicing that field deliberately for 10,000 hours. That means in order to be an expert you would have to focus 8 hours a day for nearly 3 1/2 years without taking a day off in order to achieve "expert" status. If we think of a typical work day as 8 hours a day for 20 days a month it would take 5 1/5 years to achieve expert status.
So if becoming an expert has a standard measurment tool how did the Marketing field become full of so many experts? The Savvy Sisters recently noticed some individuals who when we formed this blog 2 years ago claiming expertise in a particular field who have now done a 180 and are currently claiming expertise in an entirely different aspect of marketing. The "expert" designation seems to follow the hot technology. There seem to be a lot of SEO, eBook and Social Media experts but fewer and fewer Case Study and White Paper experts than there used to be.
So we are trying to find the experts. The real ones that you guys believe are the creme of the crop. So take our short survey below and let us know know what you think!
